Laser Periodontal Treatment
Laser Periodontal Therapy and Periodontal Disease
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Periodontal (gum) Disease and been told that you need to have surgery, there is a Less Invasive, Less Painful Alternative – Laser Periodontal Treatment
LASER PERIODONTAL (GUM) THERAPY - LPT
Periodontal treatment methods depend upon the type and severity of the disease. Dr. Granger and his hygiene staff will evaluate you for periodontal disease and recommend the appropriate treatment.
Periodontal disease progresses as the sulcus (pocket or space) between the tooth and gums gets filled with bacteria, plaque, and tartar causing irritation to the surrounding tissues. When these irritants remain in the pocket, they cause infection and damage to the gums and eventually, the bone that supports the teeth!
If Periodontal Disease is caught in its earliest stage, Gingivitis and no damage has been done, one to two regular cleanings will be recommended. You will also be given instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and having regular dental cleanings.
If your Periodontal Disease has progressed to a more advanced stage, where the infection has caused bone loss and diseased pockets have formed, Dr. Granger will discuss with you your treatment options including:
- Scaling and Root Planing
- Osseous (bone) Surgery
- Laser Periodontal (gum) Therapy
- Periodontal Pocket Elimination Therapy
Of the three choices you have to treat your disease Dr. Granger most often recommends Laser Periodontal Therapy utilizing the ezLase dental laser or the Waterlase laser. This revolutionary laser treatment is the ONLY FDA cleared protocol for regaining new tissue (gum) attachment and bone around your teeth.
The LPT Procedure
Dr. Granger will schedule a consultation to explain how the laser works and give you a demonstration. Next, Dr. Granger will take X-rays to make a definitive diagnosis and determine the extent of the infection. When you return for your first LPT treatment, you'll receive a local anesthetic to eliminate any possible discomfort. A general anesthetic isn't necessary, because LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY is much less traumatic than traditional gum surgery. A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three hairs) is placed between the tooth and the gum, and the infection is cleared away. The procedure is fast: It takes just two 1-hour sessions. Dr. Granger will treat one half of your mouth at each session.

Pocket Elimination Therapy
Periodontal measurements involving severe loss of tissue attachment may require special localized treatments. Dr. Granger uses a Waterlase MD laser to conservatively surgically treat the area. Traditionally, scalpels and stitches are necessary to access and treat the diseased area. With the Waterlase MD laser, a tiny fiber the thickness of a paperclip is used to remove and decontaminate the periodontal pocket. Then an enamel protein matrix is placed into the pocket in order to stimulate and generate bone growth and attachment to the tooth.
